Biomass

Lignocellulosic BiomassThe term Biomass refers to any biological material derived from living or recently living organisms. It most often refers to plants or plant-derived materials which are specifically called lignocellulosic biomass.

As an energy source the biomass is a very interesting alternative to fossil fuels (natural gas, fuel, oil …) since it is a renewable fuel, manageable, cheap, autochthonous and environmental friendly. It is also possible to use biomass as fuel of a CHP Plant.

Lignocellulosic biomass such as wood chips, pruning waste, almonds shells, olive pits… can be burnt directly in a boiler in order to transform the thermal energy into electricity. It is also possible to convert lignocellulosic biomass to biofuel using chemical methods.

Lignocellulosic Biomass
Non-lignocellulosic biomass such as vegetable wastes, vinasse, cattle manure, abattoir waste… cannot be easily burnt directly, but it can be converted to biogas by using biochemical methods.
Non Lignocellulosic Biomass
